Recovery of Soil Processes in Replanted Mangroves: Implications for Soil Functions

نویسندگان

چکیده

Mangrove revegetation is a vital strategy to recover ecosystem services (e.g., climate regulation and pollutants retention) provided by these ecosystems. Although soils are directly or indirectly responsible for diverse in mangrove ecosystems, few studies have focused on the recovery of soil functions carbon sequestration) after replanting. This study aimed evaluate processes associated with Fe, S, C dynamics its implications restoration functions. Two sites under replanting initiatives were studied along Brazilian coast (i.e., NE SE). The was conducted 3- 7-year-old replanted forests, comparison made degraded mature mangroves. Particle size, stocks, Fe forms, total S contents, degrees pyritization mineralogical assemblages assessed. Seven years replanting, stocks increased 42% 29% from SE sites, respectively. In addition, significant increases observed fine particles, reactive pyrite contents plots. These new conditions promoted organic matter accumulation, stabilization, potential metal retention. Our findings highlight programs recovering essential

How Mangroves Salinize the Soil How Mangroves Salinize the Soil

A transient one-dimensional model of the vertical movement of water and salt in the mangrove root zone is investigated. This is an extension of a previous steady state model which assumed that the ability of the mangrove roots to take up water is uniformly distributed throughout the soil and that the root water uptake is reduced if there is nonzero salt concentration around the roots. We show h...

How Mangroves Salinize the Soil

We consider both stationary and time dependent versions of a model describing the vertical movement of water and salt in a porous medium in which a continuous extraction of water takes place (by the roots of mangroves). The problem is formulated in terms of a coupled system of partial diierential equations for the salt concentration and the water ow which generalizes previous models. We study t...

Responses of soil microbial processes and community structure to tillage events and implications for soil quality

The short-term responses of soil microbial processes and community structure to perturbation constitute one aspect of soil quality. Such responses are often associated with an increase in the emissions of greenhouse gases (i.e., CO2, NO, or N2O) and the accumulation and potential loss of nitrate by leaching. Here we describe our recent work on responses of soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics, mic...

Soil and Belowground Processes

Soil characteristics and functions are critical determinants of rangeland systems and the ecosystem services that they provide. Rangeland soils are extremely diverse, but an emerging understanding is that paradigms developed in more mesic forest ecosystems may not be applicable. Vascular plants, biological soil crusts, and the soil microbial community are the three major functional groups of or...

Review and Classification of Modeling Approaches of Soil Hydrology Processes

To use soil hydrology processe (SHP) models, which have increasingly extended during the last years, comprehensive knowledge about these models and their modeling approaches seems to be necessary. The modeling approaches can be categorized as either classical or non-classical. Classical approaches mainly model the SHP through solving the general unsaturated flow (Richards) equation, numerically...
